Description
In the Basque language, the phrase "'Zapiak bat", literally "The seven (zazpiak)" and "one (bat)", expresses the identity of the seven provinces that form the Basque Country on either side of the Pyrenees. The Basque Country is also home to the immemorial musical tradition of "Txalaparta ", whose rhythmic richness has preserved, intact, an extraordinary potential for fascination. This tradition has been experiencing a real renaissance for the past forty years, notably under the impulse of the famous duo of brothers los Anton and Je sus Mari Artze. Zazpiak: is a cycle of seven works for different groups or soloists. It is based on the rhythmic typologies of Txalaparta, projected in multiple directions from the original work of the cycle: Zazpiak B for solo marimba, first performed in April 2014 by Jean Geoffroy, who constitutes its matrix, then Zazpiak Z, for ensemble, first performed in November 2014 by Ensemble Court-Circuit conducted by Jean Deroyer. In 2018 I composed Zazpiak PH, a kind of electronic extension of the marimba piece. In a similar way, with Zazpiak K, I am attempting a pianistic extension of some sequences of Zazpiak B, in a series of seven studies that each focus on a playing characteristic, a color, an energy and flow mode. It is therefore a question of musical invention on the Basque tradition of txalaparta. Bertrand DUBEDOUT
