Description
Caractères is a collection of nine pieces for flute and string trio, based on an overall arch form structure in which the different movements respond to each other. However, they may also be performed separately as stand-alone pieces.
#1 and #9 echo one another: they share the same playful spirit and feature piquant harmonies over an 8th-note ostinato. In #2 and #6, sudden and nervous musical motifs and close imitations reflect a Bartok-influenced inspiration. The swaying harmonies and rhythms of #3 and #7 choreograph an imaginary ballet. My love of Tex Avery cartoons comes through in #4 while #5 is all airiness, with the flute and pizzicato cello engaging in dialogue over a contemplative violin and viola background. And #8 reiterates a single pattern over ever-changing harmonies.
